Caring For Mondy in Winter
Mondy, our beloved African elephant, has called Blair Drummond Safari Park home since 1997. Despite the chilly Scottish winters, she thrives here, and her wellbeing is always our top priority. Having lived in European zoos for over 20 years before joining us, Mondy is well adapted to her environment and hasn’t had any trouble with the colder weather in all her years here.
That said, we go above and beyond to make sure she stays comfortable and cosy, no matter the season. Here’s how we care for her in winter:
Round-the-clock comfort
Mondy’s spacious indoor house is designed to keep her comfortable no matter the weather. Equipped with underfloor heating and a sensor-activated blow heater, the space stays warm and inviting, ensuring Mondy is never left in the cold. Radiator panels installed in the roof reflect heat back down, helping to maintain a consistent and cosy temperature throughout.
A toasty outdoor space
Mondy loves spending time outdoors, even when it’s chilly. To give her the best of both worlds, we’ve installed infrared heating spots in her favourite outdoor lounging area. This means that even if she wants to rest outside, she can stay warm.
Warm drinks on demand
We’ve also fitted Mondy’s indoor habitat with an insulated, heated water drinker. This ensures she has access to fresh, warm water whenever she fancies a drink – because staying hydrated is just as important in winter!
Her choice, always
The most important thing is that Mondy always has the freedom to choose. Whether she wants to wander her outdoor habitat or relax inside, the decision is entirely up to her.
