Red ruffed lemur

This striking lemur has a voice to match, with a loud booming call that can be heard for miles! One of the most endangered of the lemur species, it predominantly feeds on fruit but will also eat flowers, nectar and some leaves – they are particularly fond of figs.

Grooming is one of the red ruffed lemur’s favourite pastimes. They have specially adapted lower front teeth (a ‘dental comb’) that are perfect for the job. Like ring-tailed lemurs, red ruffed lemurs are ‘diurnal’, which means they are active during the day as opposed to at night.
