It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved red ruffed lemur, Red, who lived to the impressive age of 21. Recently diagnosed with liver cancer, his health rapidly began to decline, and after careful consideration, our vets and keepers made the compassionate decision to put him to sleep and prevent any suffering.
Red was a cherished and integral member of our red ruffed lemur troop. He was a devoted partner to his mate, Manja, and a loving father to Rua, Niiro, Mena, Robin, Rowan, and Reagan. His calm and laid-back nature made him a favourite among his keepers, and his gentle presence was a steadying influence in the troop.
As a key participant in the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme, Red’s impact was significant. Some of his grandchildren are now destined for release into the wild, helping to restore red ruffed lemur populations in Madagascar. His contribution to the survival of his species will live on, and we take comfort in knowing that his legacy will continue to be felt for generations to come.
Red will be deeply missed by his troop, his keepers, and everyone who had the privilege of meeting him.
