Join us for Vulture Weekend

4 September 2024

We’re excited to announce our upcoming Vulture Awareness Weekend on September 7th and 8th, a two-day event dedicated to celebrating and raising awareness about these incredible birds of prey.  From 10am to 5pm each day, we’ll be hosting a variety of fun, educational activities outside the Birds of Prey centre.

Here’s what you can expect:

Interactive Learning & Activities

Our Education Team has prepared a range of hands-on activities to help you learn more about vultures and other birds of prey:

  • Whose feather? Test your knowledge by matching birds to their feathers, using images and pocket microscopes kindly provided by Forth Valley College.
  • Barn owl pellet dissection: Explore the diet of barn owls by dissecting pellets with microscopes and ID sheets.
  • Kids’ colouring sheets: Let the little ones express their creativity with vulture-themed colouring activities.
  • Waterproof feathers: Compare the feathers of a sea eagle and an owl to explore how well these birds stay dry.
  • Telemetry and tracking: Learn how we monitor birds of prey in the wild with a telemetry and receiver demo.

Exciting Raffles & Games

We’ve got some fantastic prizes up for grabs, too:

  • Fly Kevin: Enter our raffle for a chance to fly Kevin, our incredible hooded vulture. This is a truly unique experience for any bird lover!
  • Guess the weight: Take a guess at the weight of various birds.
  • Tombola: Try your luck in our tombola, where you can win some bird of prey themed prizes.

Fundraising for VulPro

Throughout the weekend, we’ll be raising funds for VulPro, an organisation dedicated to the conservation of vultures across Africa. Learn more about the challenges vultures face, their distribution, and the reasons for their decline through our informative signage.

This weekend is not only a chance to learn about vultures but also to contribute to their protection through our Link to the Wild Fundraising initiative. Come and join us for Vulture Awareness Weekend on September 7th and 8th – it’s a perfect mix of education, fun, and conservation!
