Exciting news from the macaque reserve! We are celebrating the arrival of Harris, the third baby macaque to be born this year. Harris made his debut on the 27th of July 2024, and we couldn’t be more delighted to welcome him to our ever-growing troop of cheeky Barbary macaques.
Harris is the first baby for his doting mum, Laguea. She’s been incredible in her new role, keeping Harris close to her at all times to ensure his safety and comfort. You’ll often see him tucked tightly into Laguea’s side, but as he grows, he’s starting to find his feet and get more confident. Little by little, Harris is becoming curious about his surroundings, and we’re sure it won’t be long before he’s exploring all over the place!
For those planning a visit, there’s a good chance you’ll spot Harris in our drive-through macaque reserve. And don’t forget – Harris isn’t the only baby macaque we’ve welcomed this year! You might also catch sight of his fellow youngsters, Hayley and Harper, as they play and interact with the rest of the troop. Watching these babies grow and learn in the midst of such a dynamic and social species is truly special.
Our troop of Barbary macaques is incredibly important to us. Native to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and Algeria, these monkeys are endangered in the wild due to habitat loss and the illegal pet trade. We support wild macaques by donating to Barbary Macaque Awareness and Conservation, through our Link to the Wild fundraising initiative.
So, what are you waiting for? Come along and meet Harris and his family! There’s nothing quite like seeing our macaques in action – it’s a heart-warming and educational experience for all ages. We can’t wait for you to share in the joy of watching Harris grow.
See you soon!
